Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal released, reviewedUbuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal beta is already here and in a few days time, the final release will happen. We have already reviewed the latest Ubuntu 11.04 and we think it is ready for prime time, well, almost. We did encounter some amount of instability in the new Ubuntu Unity mostly because of Compiz, but overall we believe Ubuntu 11.04 is going to be a release to look forward for. Leaving all that aside for now, let's just concentrate on things you could do after installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

Linux desktop is on a roll. First came the revamped KDE 4.0 which took the level of User Interface(UI) fit and finish of Linux desktops to another level. Then came the GNOME Shell and Ubuntu Unity desktop interfaces. But one thing they all lack, especially GNOME Shell and Unity, are good looking and user friendly login screens. And here are some very interesting login screen mockups for GNOME.

Back in 2009, Android was not even considered a competition for Apple and it's iOS based devices. But in 2010 itself we witnessed the emergence of Android OS as the preferred smartphone platform for a number of major players like Motorola, HTC, Samsung and LG. And towards the end of 2010, Android even went on to overtake iPhone in U.S. for the very first time[comScore mobile subscriber estimates]. But Android is yet to make its mark in Tablet market which is currently dominated by Apple iPad. We might see that change in 2011 itself.
Yet another Faenza Icons update. This is not about the official Faenza icons theme, this is about the replacement LibreOffice icons for Faenza icon theme, if you don't like the default set of LibreOffice icons of Faenza official ie.

Latest Faenza Icon Theme 0.9.2 update brings in a new set of icons for LibreOffice, Workspace-Switcher, Wine Notepad, Winetricks, Stellarium and Mypaint. Faenza PPA now works with Ubuntu 11.04 as well.

Flock Web Browser was once a darling of the web. It was among my favorite web browsers out there until a few years ago. But then Google Chrome happened which raised the bar much higher eventually changing the whole internet space once and for all. Mozilla Firefox suddenly became *old* and had to re invent itself to survive[read Firefox 4.0]. Unfortunately, that was not the case with Flock 'Social Media' Browser.

When we listed our favorite icon themes for Ubuntu, Faenza Variants were among the ones that stole the limelight. Faenza Variants version 0.20 is a more complete package with a number of new icons and more polish.

The Linux Foundation has released a video commemorating 20 Years of the Linux Operating System. The video, aptly named 'The Story of Linux' quickly depicts the growth of Linux over the years(though any reference to the GNU project is entirely omitted for some reason). One other collection of videos we strongly recommend for everyone to see are these awesome Blender made animations and short films which you probably haven't seen before.

Elementary OS is unlike many other Ubuntu derivative distros out there. Instead of simply rearranging applications in a different order to create a new distro, Elementary project concentrates on actually building a full blown Linux distro with a consistent user interface that include custom applications and themes. The first stable release of Elementary OS codenamed "Jupiter" happened sometime last week and here is our review of it. Read on.

Hope you all remember the Bitcoin project, the much talked about open source virtual currency project which has the potential to become the gold standard of digital currency. Now, a Google engineer has released an open source Java client for the Bitcoin peer-to-peer currency called BitcoinJ. BitCoinJ implements the native BitCoin P2P protocol, which allows BitCoinJ to maintain a wallet and send/receive transactions without needing a local copy of the official implementation. Sounds promising isnt't it? Read on.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Beta 1 is released and it brings in some much needed UI(User Interface) improvements. I was impressed by the changes so much that I decided to install this beta release as my new  default operating system instead of Ubuntu 10.10.

Google has done it again. When Gmail was originally introduced few years ago, it was a revelation of sorts in terms of services and space it offered, for free. Gmail Motion Beta is Google's yet another attempt at re inventing Email technology. Gmail Motion lets you control Gmail with different body gestures, simple as that. And the best part is, this is not some concept that might be implemented sometime in the future, Gmail Motion is here and you can take the technology for a spin right now!
