How to Hide Mounted Drives from Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop?

I want my desktop to be clean and simple, I don't like it look cluttered, especially since I have Unity launcher at my disposal with easy access to favorite applications and 'places'. In Ubuntu, when you mount a drive, it will be shown in your desktop by default. I don't like it that way and this is how I hide mounted drives and removable media from showing in my desktop.

How to Hide Mounted/Removable Drives from Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop?
As you could see in the above screenshot, mounted drives and removable media are displayed both in Unity launcher and Ubuntu desktop at the same time, which is not really useful and looks cluttered. Following is what you need to do to disable mounted drives from showing up in your Ubuntu desktop.
  • Hit Alt+ F2 and type 'gconf-editor'. Gconf- Editor will open up.

  • Browse to apps - nautilus - desktop
How to Hide Mounted/removable Drives from Ubuntu Desktop
  • Notice the highlighted 'volumes_visible' option, just untick it.
  • Done. Mounted drives won't be displayed in your desktop anymore.
