We have been talking about Sintel Open Movie for some time now. Sintel is Blender foundation's third open movie project after Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny which we featured in our 8 stunning Blender made movies post.

Amarok 2.0 received a lot of flak for its rather unstable and buggy early releases. But slowly but surely, Amarok 2.0 series is getting better. Latest Amarok 2.3.2 codenamed "Moonshine" was released like a week ago and I have to say, it's a job well done.

Get ready for yet another Android based tablet. This one is from Dell. The first ever Android tablet was introduced by Samsung, like 2 weeks ago, and it is called Samsung Galaxy Tab. Galaxy Tab had impressive hardware specifications that rivals Apple's iPad and many even consider it as a better alternative. Dell's 7-inch Android tablet is the next in a long line of upcoming Android based hardware.


The level of modification possible with Nautilus is enormous and some of them were included in our 8 not-so-common nautilus hacks and improvements post. And now, we are going to introduce a bunch of useful Nautilus scripts which can further extend the functionality of nautilus in a big way.

Rhythmbox is, as you all know, the default gnome music player and default music player for Ubuntu as well. Canonical integrated Ubuntu One Music Store with Rhythmbox through a plugin with the release of Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" and the implementation works pretty good. The store has a discreet selection of music if you live in UK or USA, for everyone else it's a very small selection of music, but that's another story.

OpenOffice's future was doomed from the day when Oracle acquired SUN Microsystems. The eventuality became even more obvious when they pulled the plug on OpenSolaris. Thankfully, OpenOffice is an open source software and leading contributors of the original project has forked OpenOffice and the new project will be called LibreOffice.

Wakoopa is an online service which has a local tracker client specifically for Windows, Mac and Linux users. It tracks your usage of different applications and gives you a detailed picture of how you used it, your most used apps etc. And based on your usage patterns, Wakoopa even recommends new applications you might want to check out.


When you install something in Ubuntu, package files are downloaded for installation but are not automatically deleted after installation is over. Instead the files will be used as a backup in case the application needs a reinstall in the future. But in most cases, this is a sheer waste of space especially if you are using a old laptop or a netbook with minimal amount of disk space.

If you are long time Ubuntu user, then just may be you are also a compiz inspired linux convert, like me. Even now, I don't use a lot a compiz animations in my desktop, but I can't think of a Gnome desktop without Compiz. They are blended together so well. Compiz is nearing another major release and a lot of changes are coming.

Sintel is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. Android's 'openness factor' is proving to be the real difference. According to Gartner, Android will become the second most popular mobile operating system by 2010 year end itself. Android and Symbian will together become the dominating force of the mobile phone market with almost 60% market share by 2014.

The year 2010 is proving to be a real goldmine as far as Linux gaming is concerned. Almost a month back, we reported the release of  'Amnesia: The Dark Descent' and 'And Yet It Moves' for Linux. Now Unigine OilRush RTS game joins the fray and announces its Linux version.

As you guys should know already, Shotwell is now the default photo manager for Ubuntu 10.10 instead of F-Spot. Yorba has released Shotwell 0.7.2 with a number of bug fixes and improvements. The latest update is available via ppa for Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick.


Canonical makes another small yet significant change in Ubuntu 10.10. Downloaded DEB packages will no longer open with GDebi package installer by default, instead it opens with Ubuntu Software Center!


Wonder why I didn't knew about Preload before. Install Preload and you will see a visible change in the application loading time for good.

FSF finally responds to the whole Google vs Oracle legal tangle and the threat posed by software patents. FSF lashed out at Oracle for suing Google over various Java patents, even calls the actions by Oracle as 'unjustifiable.' FSF also adds that, "nobody deserves to be the victim of software patent aggression, and Oracle is wrong to use its patents to attack Android".

Installer slideshow was introduced during the Ubuntu Lucid release and Canonical aims to bring more polish and simplicity to the slideshow feature.

'Attention to detail' or 'enhanced UI experience' are not the kind of terminologies normally used in the Linux world. At least, that is how it used to be. It's all changing now. KDE 4.0 is a typical example. Developers completely revamped KDE from scratch and gave it a uniform user friendly appearance. Canonical's flagship Ubuntu is the next candidate. A lot of changes already happening and a ton of innovations are in the pipeline.

I have upgraded my Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10 beta. Chromium Web Browser was the first thing I installed in my new upgraded Ubuntu 10.10. When I finally launched Chromium, it had a small surprise in store for me. Chromium prompted me with a choice of popular search engines I could use.

GNOME Shell is a new completely revamped user interface for GNOME. GNOME Shell brings a new window manager called Mutter which is a combination of Metacity and Clutter. This reportedly makes Compiz unnecessary(and incompatible too).
